ADHD Cycling Study
Research Design, Project Management
Working with a Harvard Medical Psychiatrist, we designed a school program to test the impacts of cycling on ADHD and school performance, leading to the formation of a non-profit arm, the Specialized Foundation.
While the positive impacts of cycling on kids with ADHD had been shared anecdotally for years, very little research had been done in the area. As part of a dedication to youth cycling, we engaged a team through Dr. John Ratey, the preeminent voice in the relationship between exercise and young brains.
Working with our dealer network, we identified a short list of schools to participate in the program. The chosen school, Natick Elementary, worked directly with my team and the researchers to follow a stringent four-week cycling plan, during which their brain activity was measured.
The program was featured in Bicycling magazine, where it was described as a "pioneering effort in the cycling world."
Following the initial study, the participating group was expanded to twenty elected schools, and a program called Riding for Focus was launched that is now offered across the country, and which became the basis for a non-profit arm called the Specialized Foundation.
