Smiley's Saloon & Hotel
Ownership, General Management, Brand
Built in 1851 and a centerpiece of a small coastal community, Smiley’s Saloon & Hotel had fallen into disrepair. As new owners, we rebuilt 80% of the building without demolition, restoring its historical character and reestablishing it as the focal point of town, while adding full food service and an updated hotel experience.
An extensive planning and construction period tackled everything from the crumbling original beach sand foundation to the flickering electricity. Materials were repurposed wherever possible, like the 12” redwood plank siding that became the new patio tables.
A new kitchen and outdoor patio allowed us to relaunch the business during COVID-19, albeit as a very different concept, prioritizing take-out food and house bottled cocktails. Adding a robust online ordering system was a critical adjustment.
COVID changed the playing field almost daily and forced us to get creative - we added a take-out market concept that included an extensive line of retail items, some curated, others house-designed, all a clear extension of our brand.
In 2022, we got our first taste of full operations with the new concept and saw our revenue more than double compared to pre-construction. The new menu has been praised by a growing base of customers, both local and visiting.
